This negotiation activity provides the end-to-end view of the negotiation as it applies to a specific negotiation scenario. In this activity, participants will determine the best sequence of steps and tasks to be applied in the negotiation to make the negotiation successful. The activity provides the opportunity for you to test your understanding of the overall process of negotiation.

Take a look at the Scenario

You are scheduled for a client meeting who you will be interacting with for the first time. This is an important client and will be a great addition to your portfolio. Enter the details below to proceed with the activity.

1. You compile a list of all your interests, and derive what your starting amount (also known as anchor) would be.
2. You know that negotiation might not go as anticipated and accordingly develop alternatives so you also pick what would be your best alternative.
3. You have built trust by developing connection and showing flexibility in your interactions from the start, moreso during the adjustment of anchor.
4. Just before the meeting, you ensure that you have assessed all requirements to get the deal to close, including who would need to approve.
5. Your boss tells you to meet a new client A for an opportunity.
6. You determine the most effective mode and setting for the negotiation for the meeting.
7. You also predict interests of the client and start to devise some solutions that will match your and their interests.
8. You have started establishing relationships, finding common connections to highlight when you meet.
9. You have arranged a meeting with client A next week.
10. To prepare for meeting next week, you have been doing some background prep work about the decision maker before your meeting with A.
11. You persist to finalize the solutions as you progress in your discussions.
12. You arrive at a consensus for all the points of agreement and ensure necessary approvals have been obtained.
13. You present your interests and clearly understand their interests in detail in your meeting to start thinking of solutions.
14. You deliver your anchor amount and understand their anchor amount along with the interests.
15. You ensure all the agreed points are properly documented in electronic or hardcopy format.
16. You adjust the amounts back and forth with the client before arriving at the final amount.
17. You work toward the solutions based on the interests and final amount from your interactions in the negotiation.
18. If the client is not onboard with the final solutions, you might have to walkaway and rely on your alternative.
19. The documented points are signed off and communicated to all necessary stakeholders (including external communications) for the negotiation discussions to be completed.
20. You clearly share all the benefits that your proposal and solutions would bring to the client.
